About This Senate Record

This is a permanent record of the United States Senate, built around the people who hold these offices, how they have governed, who finances them, and who voters can choose in the general election.

During an election cycle, this table includes the current officeholder and the candidates who advance to the general election. Once the election is decided, the results become part of the permanent record.

Primary elections are an important part of that history, but they are state-run elections and can involve large fields of candidates who never advance to the general election. To keep this national Senate record focused and usable, primary candidates and primary results are documented in CAN's individual state records rather than in this federal table.

The same standard applies to CAN's U.S. House of Representatives record: federal tables document federal officeholders and general-election candidates and outcomes; state records preserve the full primary-election history.
