The Keystone XL Pipeline Approval Act would have authorized TransCanada to construct a 1,179-mile pipeline carrying up to 830,000 barrels of Canadian tar sands crude oil per day from Alberta to Nebraska, bypassing the normal State Department permit review process. The bill passed both chambers with nine Senate Democrats and 29 House Democrats crossing party lines to vote with Republicans. President Obama vetoed it on February 24, 2015. A Senate veto override attempt on March 4, 2015 failed 62-37, short of the 67 votes required.
